Can an auto repair shop get funding with bad credit?
A low personal credit score is the most common reason shop owners assume they will be declined. On the two products most of them actually need, it is not a cutoff at all. Here is what is read instead, and where the real floors are.
Why a low personal score is not the deciding factor
A working capital advance is not a loan. It is the purchase of a fixed amount of your shop’s future receivables at a discount, repaid by a fixed daily or weekly ACH from your operating account. Because the product is built on what the business deposits, the question an underwriter is actually answering is: does this shop take in enough money, consistently enough, to carry this debit? Your personal FICO does not answer that question. Three months of bank statements do.
That is why a shop owner with a 520 score and a steady $40,000 a month in deposits can be approved, while a 740 score with $9,000 a month cannot — the floor is $15,000 a month in business bank deposits, 6 months in business, and a U.S. business bank account.
What an underwriter reads instead of your score
- Average daily balance. More important than your top line. A shop doing $60,000 a month that holds a floor between insurer checks is a stronger file than one doing $120,000 that lives at zero.
- Deposit count and consistency. Card settlements most business days, cash, and a steady cadence of carrier or fleet checks reads as a working shop.
- NSFs and overdrafts. Three or fewer in 90 days is normal in this trade and will not kill a file. Eight will, regardless of your score.
- Your slowest month. The payment is sized against the floor in the window, not the average. A soft January is read as seasonality, not instability — send four statements if your shop is seasonal.
- Existing positions. An open advance is not automatically a decline, but hide it and it becomes one. Say so up front and the structure is usually a consolidation or a re-term.
The credit floor on each of the five products
| Product | Minimum FICO | Other minimums | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Working capital | None | $15,000/mo deposits, 6 months in business | 24 hours |
| Invoice factoring | None | $20,000 in open B2B invoices, 3 months in business | 3–5 days to open, 24h per invoice |
| Line of credit | 600 | $25,000/mo deposits, 12 months in business | 1–3 days |
| Term loan | 650 | $40,000/mo deposits, 24 months in business | 3–7 days |
| SBA 7(a) / Express | 680 | 24 months in business, 10% down, filed returns | 10–45 days |
If your score is under 600, the realistic products today are working capital and, if you invoice fleets, dealers or warranty companies on terms, factoring. Both are underwritten and funded in-house by Liftbay Capital.
What it costs, honestly
Fast money with no credit floor is the most expensive product on this site. A representative $150,000 working capital advance over 12 months has a total payback of $190,500 — a $40,500 cost of funding, $756 per business day or $3,664 a week. That is an illustration, not an offer; your numbers depend on your statements. Pay it off within the first 30, 60 or 90 days and you keep up to 30% of the remaining cost, which is why collision shops often pay down when a batch of insurer checks clears.
If you have 680 credit, two years of filed returns and a month of runway, SBA will cost a fraction of that and we will say so on the phone.
How to apply when your credit is the weak spot
- Send your three most recent months of business bank statements as PDFs downloaded from the bank — four months if your shop is seasonal.
- Make sure they are the account the insurer, DRP and fleet checks actually land in. That is the revenue a card-feed lender never sees.
- Disclose any open advance, floor plan or loan up front.
- Put a phone number on the application you actually answer. An underwriter calls with an offer in about four business hours on a complete file; a clean file signed before 11:00 AM ET generally funds the same day.

Questions that usually follow.
What credit score do I need for auto repair shop funding?
None for a working capital advance or invoice factoring at Liftbay Capital. A line of credit needs 600+, a term loan 650+, and an SBA 7(a) or Express loan 680+.
Does applying hurt my credit?
No. Submitting the application does not affect your credit. Bank statements are reviewed first. A credit pull happens only if you move forward on a credit-qualified product — a line, a term loan or SBA — and you are told before it does.
Can a mechanic with a bankruptcy get working capital?
A discharged bankruptcy is not a cutoff on working capital, because there is no credit minimum on the product. The underwriter reads the shop’s bank statements. An open, undischarged bankruptcy is a different conversation — call first.
Will bad credit make my advance cost more?
The cost of a working capital advance is set mainly by the strength of the bank statements and the term you choose, not by a credit tier. Weak statements cost more than strong ones. A low score alone does not change the file; thin deposits and a run of NSFs do.
What if my credit is bad and my statements are weak too?
Then the honest answer may be a smaller advance on a shorter term, or waiting a month or two until the statements improve. We will tell you which on the phone rather than decline you with the word “credit.”
